Negative body image and its related self esteem issues are not something that affect only women, contrary to how such concerns about physical appearance are often portrayed. Men too have their opinions on their own body influenced by the media’s portrayal of the ideal man as toned and buff. And yes, most men would love to be that way, to have a body they feel confident about and to be physically fit to boot.
Adding muscle mass, however, is not something that can be achieved overnight. There is no magic pill that will turn the leanest, lankiest man into a Terminator-style hulk instantly. Adding muscle mass is something that can be achieved only through commitment to a lifestyle that balances an optimized diet with a good level of workout.
While steroids might show quick effects at bulking muscle, the simple fact is that they are associated with many long-term health problems, including heart problems. As such, unless you require them for medical purposes, you would be advised to steer clear.
Other supplements, while some do work, really are, as they state ‘supplements’. This means they are intended to supplement a diet and lifestyle that is optimised for adding muscle mass. They will not work alone. Another thing to note about muscle building supplements is that many of them are simply protein pills.
Now, while protein does indeed assist in muscle growth, the fact is that excess protein is simply excreted by the body. So if you are eating a diet high in protein anyway, such as egg whites, milk, cheese, and beans, then you will probably find you do not need to take added supplements.
Balance a good diet with a high level of exercise and subsequent (and sufficient) recovery periods, and you can be well on your way to building the muscle mass you desire.
